Events: Increasingly positive

What a difference a year makes; or, to be more precise, what a difference the Christmas and New Year break makes.
At the end of 2011, we were all being swept along the tide of doom, gloom and industry depression. Yet we have come back off holiday to a complete hit and run of a New Year. Our Proposal writing team, Production division and Design guys have been up to their proverbial in full service, short lead briefs for clients that have obviously had budgets signed off.
I had expected that the psychology of the New Year would bring some additional activity after the season’s festivities had ended; I expected that there would be a degree of renewed vigour…But my goodness, I didn’t expect car launch tenders, international product launches, conferences, incentive briefs and comms proposals to be ‘snowing us under’ in quite the way they have.
Clearly, this is a fabulous problem to have, and we will, as we always do, give it our best shot. We have events to deliver in Q1, which will of course be completed to the very best of our abilities, but I just hope that this is the start of a return to some semblance of normality…whatever that is!
It seems that all of us in this industry have become a tad cynical, for good reason. That awful word ‘perception’ was rearing its ugly head again towards the end of last year, so one can’t help but constantly look over one’s shoulder, ready to intercept the next curve-ball.
However, I am personally, feeling increasingly positive about what 2012 might have in store for us. With a little bit of luck, a lot of hard work and a fair share of creative flair that our industry is known for, perhaps, just perhaps, the worst effects of this terrible recession are actually over?
Here’s hoping that the light at the end of the tunnel does not turn out to be an oncoming train! Naïve…moi?
