Who can deny the great sense of national pride that has been sweeping the nation over the past few years. The Royal Wedding, The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and biggest and best of them all, the Olympics games for which London came alive with its international melting pot of supporters.
Although the Olympics may feel like a distant memory to some, fear not, the Commonwealth games is making its way to the UK in 2014 hosted by the city of Glasgow. This is the chance to rekindle that incredible buzz and be part, once again, of sporting history. It’s a double whammy for Scotland in 2014 with the Ryder Cup being hosted at Gleneagles, and for those budding golfers out there, you could almost say returning to its home.
What’s on offer?
A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of meeting with Glasgow City Marketing Bureau along with Visit Scotland to discuss the potential of corporate groups visiting Glasgow and being part of this momentous occasion. They demonstrated that Glasgow could deliver great opportunities to bring your team together to plan for the future in a competitive and vibrant environment, grouped with the opportunity to see some of the best athletes in the world!
But what else does Glasgow have to offer, I hear you ask? From someone who had never visited the city before I was genuinely surprised. Cast aside the stereotypes and let’s begin with just how lovely the people are. From the taxi driver to the lady sitting next to me in a bar, nothing makes you feel better when you are travelling on your own than partaking in a bit of friendly chit chat. According to Glasgow City Marketing Bureau and their new strap line, “People Make Glasgow”, and they are right!
But how is Glasgow going to work for you? Well, the city has an abundance of meetings and event spaces including over 6,000 rooms in the city vicinity and up to 12,000 in the surrounding area meaning that you are sure to find the perfect place for your group to rest their heads. You are truly spoilt for choice with the activities available to support your meeting programme or hospitality event. Did you know that in 2011 Glasgow won the title of European City of the Year, fending off Budapest and Helsinki and is home to more than 100 cultural organisations including the Scottish National Orchestra, Theatre, Opera and Ballet?
Or, if you prefer the great outdoors, in just 30 minutes you could find yourself gazing over stunning Loch Lomond from a seaplane. If soaring through the air is not your thing, what could be a better setting for country pursuits, so don a pair of wellies and enjoy some shooting or falconry. This is all without mentioning the culinary Scottish delights you could be experiencing; from Haggis tasting to visiting a famous whisky distillery.
P&MM’s Glasgow office will work with you to put together a great itinerary, perhaps taking in one of these fabulous sporting events. Why not let us suggest the very best there is to offer in the local area and hunt out some hidden gems to make your group feel really special? We would love to see you in Glasgow!
