Sun, Sea And Success For Second Clipper Challenge Event
Our World | On 06, Jun 2013
Yesterday the 2nd P&MM Clipper Challenge took to the sea on what can only be described as a picture perfect sailing day. The sun shone, a gentle wind blew and the 8 yachts took part in a fiercely competitive day of training and racing which culminated in the crew from the yacht sponsored by Kerzner and Leading Hotels of the World taking first place.
The camaraderie onboard had started the evening before when everyone arrived at Gunwharf Quays in Portsmouth to meet their team mates and stow their gear about the 68ft Clipper racing yachts. Friendly rivalry between the teams was quick to get going once the first briefing took place and everyone started to bond.
A Unique Forum in a Unique Venue
Clipper Challenge is not just about the chance to take part out on the water but it’s also the bringing together of industry professionals from the corporate sector and the supplier side in a unique forum to discuss issues affecting everyone in the events arena. This year we were privileged to do this in the amazing setting of the Mary Rose Museum and be the first in our industry to hold a corporate event there. Nigel Cooper, Divisional Managing Director, Motivcom plc, shared findings from the 2013 METRIC survey undertaken by P&MM on trends in our business, particularly highlighting the effect of short lead times in event planning. Martin Lewis, (Managing Editor, CAT Publications) then chaired a lively and informed debate where buyers and suppliers alike exchanged views on a wide range of business topics.
The Mary Rose Museum had only opened a few days earlier and guests were treated to a private tour before the networking opportunities continued late into the evening.
Bigger and Better
Feedback from those who attended our inaugural event last year was that the 2013 P&MM Clipper Challenge was bigger and better having grown not only in size but in the depth of the business content involved. Eight yachts took part this year, three more than in 2012, along with more sponsors and guests. Feedback has been amazing from all concerned and we will be sharing information, images and video over the coming weeks with everyone concerned through Our World and our social media channels. The question or rather demand from lots of people before the event drew to a close was when would we be holding next year’s event. This year will be a hard act to follow but ideas are already on the table for the business session and diaries are being checked for dates, so stay tuned.
All in all it was an amazing experience and if the saying “the sun shines on the righteous”, is to be believed then the sponsors and guests who attended P&MM’s Clipper Challenge must have been an incredibly angelic group of people!
